Restoring the 1974 Series III
Unbelievably, even at 45 years this Landy was driving strong even before the restoration. The 4 wheel drive was kicking right into place and getting it over all types of difficult test terrain. To be certain it will continue to drive strong for years to come, the engine was given an overhaul and all lights and any mechanicals were replaced.
Exterior: The body was completely deconstructed to remove all paint and dings so it could be built back up to it's original state. "Light Green", which is one of the 6 original Land Rover Series colors was selected and each piece of the body was carefully primed and painted. A decision couldn't be made between a convertible option or hard top, so we decided to go with both. A canvas top was constructed, with a removable frame, and the hard top was comletely restored. This allows for a choice between a completely convertible ride, a soft top, a bimini top (canvas sides rolled-up), and a hard top.
Left Hand Drive: Since the vehicle was is parts, we were able to also move the drivers side to the left hand side. This is a unique aspect about the original Land Rovers, the bulkhead and dash was constructed so that the drivers side could easily be on the left side or the right. The LHD steering columns and other required parts were purchased and then the assembly of the body began. After everything was assembled, an extra wheel was fitted on the hood, a tow hitch on the rear, and a fold down door with the soft top allows for easy access to the rear seats. A full door is also included when switching to the hard top.
Once the body took shape, the interior fun began. The seats were restuffed and custom covers created to stay true to the original. Bench seats were installed in the rear, all seats include belts, giving a total of capacity of 7. A tight fit with 3 in the front and 4 in the rear. The steering wheel was cleaned up but left unfinished and the dash was repaired and refinished. Door cards were created to match the style of the seats.
